Learning outcomes of the course unit:
The aim is understanding the relation between the electronic structure of atoms and molecules and their properties, stressing properties of materials. Students will acquire a knowledge about the periodic law and its importance in atomic and molecular properties, chemical bond, the structure and constitution of chemical compoundds, will understand principles of the chemical thermodynamics and reactivity. The student will be acquainted with principles of electrical and optical properties of molecules as related to the electronic structure of molecules and basic principles of spectroscopy.
 
Course contents:
1. Basic principles of general chemistry. Chemical nomenclature and terminology. Mendeleev periodic Table.
2. The hydrogen atom, electronic structure of many-electron atoms from the point of view of quantum physics. Pauli principle. Multiplicity.
3. Periodic properties of elements and their electronic structure. Transition metal elements.
4 - 5. Chemical bond, molecular energy states, dissociation energy, ionization energy, electron affinity. Physical properties of molecules, electrical, optical and magnetic properties.
6. Symmetry, coordination compounds, low and high spin states, relation to optical and magnetic properties.
7. Chemical bond in organic componds.Polymérs, plastics.
8. Principles of spectroscopy, selection rules. Fluorescence and phosphorescence.
9. From free molecules to the gas phase, liquids and the solid state. Semiconductors.
10. Chemical thermodynamics, thermochemistry, chemical equilibria, protolytic reactions, redox reactions.
11. Acids and bases, pH.
12. Chemical change, first and second order reactions, molecularity, rate constants. Activation energy. Catalysis.
13. Radioactivity.
