Learning outcomes of the course unit:
The student will acquire advanced knowledge of metallographic analysis of the content of the subject material science. Obtain knowledge about light and scanning electron microscopy and preparation of samples for metallographic welded joints and fractographic analysis. The student can be able identify different phases and structural formations in welded joints of ferrous and non-ferrous alloys. The student find the relationship between equilibrium diagrams and real macrostructure and microstructure of welded joints. He can be obtained knowledges of the fractographic analysis. Student able to identify the fracture mechanism of welded joints based on morphological characteristics of the different types of fractures. All theoretical knowledge practically verified by the analysis of real welded joints.

Methods for preparation of metallographic and fractographic samples
Main characteristics and principles of metallographic and scanning electron microscope.
Microstructural characterization of welded joints
Detailed macroscopic and microscopic analysis of welded joints alloys based on iron and non-ferrous metals
Methods for detecting defects of welded joints
Fundamental mechanisms fracture of materials
Brittle and ductile fracture
Morphological macro and microcharacterization of fracture surfaces
Relationship between microstructure of welded joints and fracture behavior

Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The class is divided into blocks of lectures and practical exercises. Maximum number of students in the group is 5 to 6. The exercises are carried out in the laboratories with the modern excellent equipment and facilities. Measurements are connected with the diploma project.
 
Assesment methods and criteria: Written and oral exam with including evaluation results of completed exercises. For rating A must be obtained at least 92 points, to obtain rating B at least 82 points, to obtain rating C at least 73 points, to obtain rating D at least 64 points and to obtain rating E at least 56 points for exercise and tests.
