|The goal of this course is to teach students basics of intermediary metabolism. Following topics will be taught:
Utilization and detoxification of ammonia in ureogenetic cycle. General reactions of amino acids. Biosynthesis of encoded amino acids. Reactions of transfer of C1 groups. Degradation of amino acid side chains. Glucogenic and ketogenic amino acids. Biosynthetic pathways associated with degradation of amino acids.
Biosynthesis and degradation of purine and pyrimidine bases and nucleotides. Biosynthesis of deoxyribonucleotides. Haem biosynthesis and degradation. Pterine biosynthesis.
Metabolism of complex lipids, icosanoids, izoprenoids, steroids, carotenoids, polyketides. Primary and secondary metabolism.
Biological membranes, composition, structure, models, biogenesis.
Energetics and transport mechanisms.
Biological signalizations. Reception, transduction, receptors, transduction mechanisms. Second messenger. Effector mechanisms. Hormons.
Integrative mechanisms in cells and organisms (homeostasis, pH, Ca, glucose). Blood coagulation. Nerve system and its function.
Light and living organisms. Light as energy source. Response of organisms to the light pulse. Bioluminiscence. Mechanism of vision.
Biochemical basis of motility and contractility. Cytoskeleton. Muscles and other contractile proteins.
Metabolism of xenobiotics. The role of oxygen in metabolism. Reactive oxygen species and their detoxification. Enzymic requirements of detoxification
