Learning outcomes of the course unit:
To provide students with knowledge of the acellular infectious particles, metabolism, genetics, diversity and biotic relationships of microorganisms with emphasis on practical applications in biotechnology, medicine and environmental processes.
 
Prerequisites and co-requisites: none
 
Course contents:
Viruses, bacteriophages, prions. Genetics of microorganisms, mutation, gene transfer and recombination. Selection of mutants. Microbial genomics, genetic engineering. Virulence, pathogenicity, host-pathogen interactions. Microorganisms as agents of infectious diseases. Microorganisms in the biosphere. Catabolic and anabolic processes of microorganisms and their technological importance.
