The course is closed by oral examination. Students have to pass the examen with a note better than FX.
 
Learning outcomes of the course unit:
The goal of the course is to provide information for students about the biochemical bases of functioning of living organisms, which are relevant for the theory and praxis of food sciences.
 
Course contents:
Utilisation and detoxification of ammonia in ureogenetic cycle. General reactions of amino acids. Biosyntheses of canonical amino acids. Metabolism of C1 compound. Degradation of amino acid side chains. Ketogenic and glucogenic amino acids. Biosynthetic pathways linked to the degradation of amino acid side chains.
Biosynthesis and degradation of purine and pyrimidine bases and nucleotides. Deoxyribonucleotide biosynthesis. Biosynthesis and degradation of haem. Pterine biosynthesis.
Metabolism of complex lipids, eicosanoids, isoprenoids, steroids, carotenoids and polyketides. Primary and secondary metabolism.
Biological membranes, composition, structure, biogenesis. Mechanisms and energetics of solutes transport across biological membranes.
Biological signals. Reception, transduction, effector mechqanism. Receptors and transduction mechanism. Second Messenger. Effector mechanisms. Hormones.
Integration of cells and organisms (homeostasis, maintaining of pH, Ca2+ and glucose levels). Blood coagulation. Nerve system and its function.
Light reception. Bioluminiscence.
Biochemical bases of motility and contractility. Cytoskeleton. Muscle fibers and other contractile systems and proteins. .
Metabolism of xenobiotics. The role of oxygen. Active oxygen species. Detoxication mechanism in cells and organisms. Properties of detoxication enzymes.
