Learning outcomes of the course unit:
Industrial microorganisms, basic regulatory mechanisms, overproduction. Substrates and nutrition in biotechnological processes, waste utilization, new trends in fermentation and isolation procedures. The microbial biomass-disintegration, stabilization, purification techniques for the isolation of metabolites and cellular components. Microbial production of organic acids by filamentous fungi, the specifics of working with filamentous fungi. Bacterial producers of organic acids. Fermentation preparation of amino acids, biopolymers and solvents. Biotransformation - principles and procedures for the preparation of metabolites. Preparation of carbohydrates, polyols, sterols, alkaloids and bioflavorings.

 
Prerequisites and co-requisites: none
 
Course contents:
-Microorganisms as metabolites producers. Relationships between primary and secondary metabolisms, mechanisms of regulation, overproduction of metabolites. Industrial mikrobiology.
-Substrates and nutrition in biotechnological processes, waste utilization, new trends in fermentation and isolation procedures.
-Microbial production of organic acids by filamentous fungi, the specifics of working with filamentous fungi. Bacterial producers of organic acids.
-Fermentation technics, possibilities of improvement of the current technologies, immobilization of the cells (enzymes) and continualisation of the process. Preparation of amino acids, biopolymers and solvents.
-Biotransformations - principles and procedures for the preparation of metabolites. Preparation of carbohydrates, polyols, sterols, alkaloids and bioflavours.
-The microbial biomass-disintegration, stabilization, purification techniques for the isolation of metabolites and cellular components.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods: A one semester lecture course and personal consultations.
 
Assesment methods and criteria: The examination is written and orally. First, the student writes a test (60 min). After evaluating the test followed by interview.
