Assesment methods:
Students will be allowed to pass the exam if they have participated at least at 5 consultations or 5 lectures. Students will pass oral exam for 100 points. The maximum number of points required for the oral exam is 55 points. Students will get credits for the course if they successfully pas both, the written tests and the oral exam. Student receives credit if the results were assessed by one of the classification grades from A to E. Students are graded as follows:A - 92-100%, B - 83-91, C - 74-82, D - 65-73 E - 56-64, FX - 0-55%.
Learning outcomes of the course unit:
Student acquires complex knowledge on structure and microstructure of ceramic materials and inorganic binders in relationship with driving factors at burning and sintering. He knows the kinetics of homogeneous and heterogeneous solid state reactions and crystallization, mechanism and thermodynamics of the formation of silicate products. He is able to set the composition of composite materials to optimize engineering properties or to perform one fundamental characteristic of structural and functional inorganic materials.
Course contents:
The theory of phase equilibriums in multi oxide systems. Physical chemistry of colloid systems: sol-gel and hydration of inorganic binders. Kinetics of heterogeneous reactions of solids. Mechanisms of diffusion, the kinetics of the polymorphism transformation. Nucleation and crystal growth: homogeneous and heterogeneous nucleation. Sintering, the formation of the molten glass, solids dissolution in melts
