Learning outcomes of the course unit:
The student acquires knowledge of fundamental laws and concepts used to explain and interpret the physico-chemical properties of matter. Students learn the fundamentals of electrochemistry, chemical kinetics and catalysis, colloid chemistry and molecular spectroscopy.
 
Prerequisites and co-requisites: none
 
Course contents:
Electrochemistry: conductivity of the electrolyte solutions, thermodynamic properties of ions in solution, equilibrium electrochemistry, electrochemical cells, polarization of electrodes
Chemical kinetics: rate of chemical reaction, kinetics of elementary and complex reactions, factors influencing the rate of chemical reactions, catalysis
Colloid chemistry: colloidal state, types of colloidal systems, surface energy and wetting, capillarity, adsorption
Molecular spectroscopy: Lambert-Beer law, the basic principles of infrared and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, fundamentals of magnetic resonance spectroscopies

Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Physical Chemistry II is divided into the lectures and seminars. The lectures are focused on the explanation of the fundamentals and basic principles and the seminars, directly related to the lectures, are oriented on the problem solving and exercises.
 
Assesment methods and criteria: Physical Chemistry II course culminates in an exam. The notation is defined by the currently valid study regulations at the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava.
For the participation in the exam the full attendance at the seminars and minimum score of 50 % in the short tests are required. The exam is written and consists of two parts, problem solving and theory. It is possible to get through the problem solving part of the exam during the term by attending two written tests. In the case of passing these tests, the exam consists only of the theoretical part. Participation on the two written tests during the term is optional.
