University: Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava
Faculty: Faculty of Chemical and Food Technology
Course unit title: Physical Chemistry I
Course unit code: 421F0_4B
Mode of completion and Number of ECTS credits: Exam (5 credits)

Name of lecturer: doc. Ing. Dana Dvoranová, PhD. (person responsible for course) - slovak, english

Learning outcomes of the course unit:
The student acquires knowledge of fundamental laws and concepts used to explain and interpret the physico-chemical properties of matter. Students learn the properties of gases; a substantial part of the course is focused on the chemical thermodynamics and chemical equilibria.

Prerequisites and co-requisites: passed Mathematics I and passed Physics I

Course contents:
States of matter: ideal and real gas, equations of state, kinetic theory of ideal gas
Thermodynamics: the first law, the second law, potential functions, the third law,
Thermochemistry: thermochemical laws, reaction quantities, the temperature dependence of reaction enthalpy
Pure substances: fugacity and activity of gases, phase transitions of pure substances
Mixtures (multicomponent and multiphase systems): activities in non-electrolyte mixtures, colligative properties, phase diagrams, condensed systems
Chemical equilibria: reaction isotherm equation, equilibrium constants of gas, liquid and heterogeneous systems, the response of equilibria to the conditions, calculation of the equilibrium composition

Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Physical Chemistry I is divided into the lectures and seminars. The lectures are focused on the explanation of the fundamentals and basic principles and the seminars, directly related to the lectures, are oriented on the problem solving and exercises.

Assesment methods and criteria: Physical Chemistry I course culminates in an exam. The notation is defined by the currently valid study regulations at the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava.
For the participation in the exam the full attendance at the seminars and minimum score of 50 % in the short tests are required. The exam is written and consists of two parts, problem solving and theory. It is possible to get through the problem solving part of the exam during the term by attending two written tests. In the case of passing these tests, the exam consists only of the theoretical part. Participation on the two written tests during the term is optional.

Language of instruction: Slovak, English

Work placement(s): There is no compulsory work placement in the course unit.
