University: Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava
Faculty: Faculty of Chemical and Food Technology
Course unit title: Industrial Organic Chemistry
Course unit code: N413P0_4I
Mode of completion and Number of ECTS credits: Exam (4 credits)

Name of lecturer: doc. Ing. Magdaléna Štolcová, PhD. (examiner, instructor, lecturer, person responsible for course) - slovak, english

Learning outcomes of the course unit:
The student will acquire knowledge of industrial methods of production of basic chemicals and intermediates based on the carbon-based raw materials such as oil, natural gas and coal, in a way from the complex reaction mechanism to examples of technology. He can take a position on the possibility of using renewable raw materials for the production of industrially important chemicals in terms of sustainability chemistry.

Prerequisites and co-requisites: none

Course contents:
Reaction mechanisms, basic processes and technology for production of the most important organic compounds, intermediates and final organic chemicals using particular alkylation, acylation, isomerization, polymerization, polycondensation, polyadition, halogenations, nitration, sulfonation, oxidation, hydrogenation, hydration, esterification, etherification, condensation and amination reactions.

Recommended or required reading:
Basic:
WEISSERMEL, K. -- ARPE, H. Industrial Organic Chemistry. Weinheim : Wiley-VCH, 2003. 491 p. ISBN 3-527-30578-5.
KIRK, R. -- OTHMER, D. Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology. New York: Wiley, 2006.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course is composed of lectures and seminars. Exercise students present a non-traditional, environmentally preferable or less industrially used methods of preparing the compounds, in search of available literature in the context of homework.

Assesment methods and criteria: The obtained knowledge students prove by tests and in some cases after supplementing oral questions.

Language of instruction: Slovak, English

Work placement(s): There is no compulsory work placement in the course unit.
