Course contents:
1.Structural effects on stability and reactivity. (allowance 12/0)
a.Thermodynamic stability. Relationship between structure and thermodynamic stability for hydrocarbons.
b.Stability of intermediates: carbonium ions, radicals and carbanions. Structure and reactivity of carbonium ions
c.Mechanisms of rearrangement of carbenium ions.
d.Acidity of hydrocarbons.

2.Chemical kinetics. (allowance 8/0)
a.Fundamental principles of chemical kinetics.
b.Activation parameters. Correlations between thermodynamic and kinetic aspects of reactions.
c.Kinetic isotope effects. Solvent effects.
d.Catalysis of organic reactions.
e.Linear free-energy relationships for substituent effects. Hammett equation.

3.Mechanisms for selected reactions. (allowance 15/0)
a.Nucleophilic substitution. Mechanisms for nucleophilic substitution - SN1 and SN2.
b.Relationship between structure, stereochemistry and mechanism of substitution.
c.Neighbouring group participation.

4.Polar addition and elimination reactions. (allowance 15/0)
a.Addition of hydrogen halides to alkenes and alkynes.
b.Epoxidation and dihydroxylation of alkenes.
c.Hydroboration, hydrogenation and hydratation of alkenes and alkynes.
d.Elimination reactions. Mechanisms, regio- and stereochemistry of elimination reactions.

5.Addition, condensation and substitution reactions of carbonyl compounds. (allowance 15/0)
a.Reactivity of carbonyl compounds toward addition. Hydratation and addition of alcohols to
aldehydes and ketones.
b.Condensation reactions of aldehydes and ketones with nitrogen nucleophiles.
c.Substitution reactions of carboxylic acid derivatives.
d.Addition of enolates and enols to carbonyl compounds. Aldol reaction.
