Learning outcomes of the course unit:
To obtain knowledge about soil properties and methods of soil properties determination in the laboratory, using field tests and considering comparable experience. Basic stability and deformation problems. Principle of spread and deep foundation design. To understand fundamental knowledge of geotechnical works for soil improvement, interaction of structure and subsoil. Basic design methods for excavation and foundation pits with dewatering and sealing systems.
 
Course contents:
Introduction to Geotechnical Engineering
Engineering properties of soils including their descriptions and classifications.
Strength and deformation characteristics of soils and their determination.
Stress distribution in the ground and consolidation.
Requirements for geotechnical investigation, interpretation of geotechnical data, sampling for the establishment, classification of soils and rocks, geotechnical category.
Shallow foundations, depth of foundation.
Design of shallow foundations in accordance with the principles of the different geotechnical categories.
Deep foundations: design, construction requirements, technology.
Types of excavation pits, stability of slopes, dewatering of excavation,
Retaining structures: sheet piling, pile walls, cut-of walls; technology and construction.
Soil Improving - intoduction, basic methods.
