Assesment methods:
The conditions of examination are the active participation in the exercises (max. 3 absences)and correctly prepared given computing protocols:
1. Orthodrome a loxodrome
2. Distortion elipse
3. Cartographic projections of Slovakia territory in Austro-Hungarian Monarchy
4. Křovák and Lambert projection of Slovakia territory
5. UTM of Slovakia territory
 
Learning outcomes of the course unit:
Students achieve a review in cartography projections of reference surfaces of Earth and in theory of distortions. The main accent is in explanation of mathematical properties of cartographic projections used on maps of the Slovak Republic and transformations between coordinates in geodetic systems (for example ETRS89, JTSK, UTM). The aim of subject is also to show the theory of choice of cartographic projections for using in geodesy or cartography, creation and optimization of cartographic projections by methods of general theory of mathematical cartography and criteria of evaluation of cartographic projection.
 
Course contents:
•Theory of distortions in cartographic projections.
•Clasification of cartographic projections. Projections of reference ellipsoid into a sphere.
•Cylindrical projections and their aplications on maps of the Slovakia territory
(Fasching and Cassini-Soldner projection). Conical projections.
•Azimuthal projections and their aplications on maps of the Slovakia (stereographic projection).
•Pseudocylindrical, pseudoconical and pseudoazimuthal projections. Polyhedral, polyconic and other type of cartographic projections.
•Outline of geodetic coordinate systems in the Slovakia territory. Křovák projection of JTSK, Lambert projection for SR.
•Gauss--Krüger projection and Universal Transversal Mercator (UTM). Transformations between coordinates in geodetic systems (for example ETRS89, JTSK, UTM).
•Characteristics of the cartographic projections used in some of the European countries.
•Transformations of co-ordinates between GSS used in Slovakia.
•Choice of cartographic projections. Criteria of evaluation of cartographic projection.
•General theory of mathematical cartography, creation and optimization of cartographic projections and automatization in mathematical cartography.
•Historical outline of mathematical carthography evolution.
