Learning outcomes of the course unit:
Students will gain hands-on experience and competences in various topics related to communication through exercises. They are oriented in the basics of verbal and non-verbal communication, they have knowledge about individual forms and components of communication and their specifics. The student gains skills in presenting the subject, understands the principles of assertive communication, active listening, interview, and has the ability to apply this information in practice. S/he has a basic overview of communication styles and social styles and the ability to reflect aspects of his own communication.
 
Course contents:
1.) The communication and its components
Activities aimed at defining the basic concepts, principles and components of communication Methods: brainstorming, discussion, interpretation.
2.) Verbal communication
Defining verbal communication, basic concepts and principles, types of questions, conducting interviews, etc. using analysis of model situation, role play, group work, discussion and factual summary.
3.) Non-verbal communication
Activities aimed at identifying and categorizing the components of non-verbal communication and their functions in communication - mimics, gestures, postures, haptics, proxemics, speech, pauses, and dynamics of non-verbal elements. Methods: analysis of model situation, role play, improvisation, and discussion.
4.) Assertiveness
Brief explanation and activities aimed at defining the basic rules of assertiveness. Assertive approach to conflict resolution. Analysis of model situations, brainstorming, group work, practice of assertive practices in communication – improvisation, discussion.
5.) Active listening
Understanding and definition the theme through activities. Improvisation, analysis of the model situation, discussion. Active listening practice.
6.) The presentation skills
Practice, analysis, and fixation of presentation skills. Simulation of group presentation, topic presentation, feedback, analysis of individual aspects of presentation, verbal and non-verbal expression. Defining the basic rules of effective presentation, verbal and nonverbal aspects of presentation, group analysis of student presentations, discussion.
7.) The communication styles
The activities aimed at defining and reviewing communication styles. The analysis of model situations, the analysis of own communication style, improvisation, discussion, and summary.
8.) Social styles
The overview of the social styles and practical demonstrations, analysis, defining their own social style, and self-reflection.
9.) Leading of discussion, facilitation
Activities focused on the principles of group discussion, practical training, and analysis.
