Assesment methods:
Students present their projects from given topic on seminars during semester. Quality of elaboraion and presentation of the project represents 30 % of the total assessment, knowledge from subject explained during lectures represents 70 %. Overall rating is governed by "Study Order of the STU."
Learning outcomes of the course unit:
Student understands the physical and chemical processes of processing and use of gaseous, liquid and solid fuels of fossil origin and renewable energy sources. Student gain knowledge about the method of production and the quality of automotive fuels. Student understands processes of production of petroleum and synthetic oils, their properties, additives to improve performance of lubricants. The student has knowledge on the relationship between the composition, properties and use of specific fuels and lubricants. The student understands the impact of fuels and lubricants to the environment, as well as the processing of used lubricating oils.
Course contents:
1.Introduction. Fuels and the carbon cycle in nature. Fossil fuel sources. Sources of alternative fuels. Reserves and production of fossil fuels in the world and in the Slovak Republic. (allowance 2/2)
2.Relationships between structure and properties of hydrocarbon fuels. Intermolecular interactions, volatility, melting and solidification, density, viscosity, solubility, flash point and the combustion temperature, lower heating value and higher heating value. (allowance 2/2)
3.Solid fuels. (allowance 3/3)
a.Composition, properties and types of solid fossil fuels. Carbonization and coke production. Production of liquid fuels from coal. Coal gasification.
b.Wood, biomass - composition and energetic-chemical processing. High-temperature and low-temperature pyrolysis, gasification, incineration with coal.
c.Carbon products from fossil sources and biofuels. Activated carbon, graphite.

4.Gaseous fuels. Natural gas and light hydrocarbons. Biogas. Hydrogen. (allowance 3/3)
a.Hydrogen production - steam reforming, partial oxidation, hydrogen from refinery gases.

5.Liquid fuels -- fossil and synthetic. (allowance 4/4)
a.Automotive gasolines.
b.Fuels for diesel engines -- diesel fuels.
c.Aviation fuels.
d.Energetic fuels - heating oils.
e.Liquid biofuels.

6.Tribology, friction, modes of friction and lubrication, functions of lubricants. Losses through friction, types of surfaces abrasion and methods of its reduction. Properties of lubricants (functional, durability, temperature criteria for defining the field of application of lubricants). (allowance 2/2)
7.Gaseous lubricants, properties and uses. Solid lubricants (inorganic, organic, soft metals, solid coatings) - the composition, properties and uses. (allowance 2/2)
8.Liquid lubricants. (allowance 3/3)
a.Crude oil origin - production, range of base oils. Usage.
b.Synthetic (polyolefins, esters of carboxylic acids, alkyl aromatics, halogen-containing lubricants, polyglycols, polyphenylethers, polysiloxanes) - composition, properties and applications.

9.Greases, composition, properties, applications. (allowance 1/1)
10.Additives to liquid lubricants. The mechanism of action of additives. Antioxidants, detergents and dispersants, anti- corrosion additives, anti-foam additives, emulsifiers. Viscosity modifiers and modifiers of viscosity- temperature curve, depressants, anti-wear and lubricity additives, extreme pressure addities, biocides. (allowance 2/2)
11.Effect of fuels and lubricants on environment, technology for regeneration of used oil, properties of regenerated oil. (allowance 2/2)
