Laboratory (16), active participation on seminars, individual work (40). Exam: theory (24) and problems (20).
Learning outcomes of the course unit:
Physics 3 is a a 3dr part of the Basic Course of Physics. Its aim is to give students basic information about physical phenomena observed and used in materials: atomic structure, many particle statistical physics, mechanical and electromagentic waves.
Course contents:
Harmonic oscillator. Coupled oscilaltors. Resonance in physical systems (mechanical systems, LC circuit, absorption lines in spectra, transmission of electromagnetic waves). Oscillations in systems with many degrees of freedom. Eigenfrequencies. Hook's law. Thermal expansion. Waves, wave equation. Polarization, dispersion, interference, diffraction. Statistical mechanics. Systems with many particles. Maxwell's distribution. Thermal capacity of gases. Particle in random environment: Brown motion, diffusion. Blackbody radiation, Planck's constant. Light quantization, Photon, Photoelectric efect, X-rays. Stefan-Boltzman Law. Matter waves: diffracion of electrons, alpha-decay. Atomic structure, spectral lines. Hydrogen atom, Bohr's model.
