Course unit code: N426P2_4I
Course unit title: Principles and Methodology of Molecular Medicine
Mode of delivery, planned learning activities and teaching methods:
lecture2 hours weekly (on-site method)

Credits allocated: 2

Recommended semester/trimester: Biochemistry and Biomedical Technologies - master (semi-compulsory), 2. semester
Nutrition and Food Quality Assessment - master (semi-compulsory), 2. semester
Level of study: 2.
Prerequisites for registration: none

Assesment methods:
There is no monitoring of student's knowledge during the course.

Learning outcomes of the course unit:
Student will obtain knowledge about fundamental principles of molecular medicine, I.e., about causality in development of different diseases as a reason of deregulation in molecular processes running in cells of different human tissue. Student will comprehend relations between regulation and metabolic pathway dysfunction and etiopathogenesis of different disorders. Student also will obtain the knowledge about possibilities of accurate analysis and targeted therapy of prevalent civilization diseases, which induce to more than 80 % people death in Slovakia. Student will be oriented in interdisciplinary intercepts of modern genomic, proteomic and metabolomic in elucidation of etiopathogenesis of disorders and adjusting of accurate therapy based on directing of molecular processes running in specific cells.

Course contents:
a. Molecular causality of pathophysiological processes involved in development of civilization diseases; etiopathogenesis of disorders in relation of individual human genotype and phenotype
b. Prevalent monogenic diseases diagnosis and therapy
c. Diseases associated with malfunction in blood circulation; substrate and oxygen distribution; hypoxia and ischemia of tissue and its molecular markers; commencement of oxidative stress and reactive oxygen form generation; molecular diagnostic and targeted therapy.
d. Carcinogenesis, development of neoplastic diseases; principles of (chemo)therapy; induction of programmed death of neoplastic cells – mechanisms and markers; molecular mechanisms operating against therapy effectiveness causing therapy failure; molecular diagnostics and its importance for assuming the effective therapeutic protocol and prognosis assessment.
e. Causality in nervous system diseases, markers, diagnostics, prevention and therapy
f. Pathological situations and diseases associated with metabolism malfunction, diagnosis, therapy and prevention by adequate nutrition and living style.
g. Infection diseases, rapid diagnosis and effective therapy; development of drugs and vaccines; (multi)drug resistance of microorganism and antibiotic therapy failure.
