Learning outcomes of the course unit:
By studying the curriculum, students will obtain knowledge on basic principles and technologies of decontamination of persistent organic pollutants (dangerous contaminants of the environment) mainly by means of the biological approaches using degradation ability of microorganisms, fungi, and plants, i.e. using bioremediation, mycoremediation, and phytoremediation technologies, as well as physico-chemical technologies, nanotechnologies, and other innovative technologies. Understanding of basic principles of bioremediation technologies as the alternative of physico-chemical methods is being emphasized. Combustion and non-combustion technologies, plasma technologies. Classification of remediation technologies.Environmental burdens.Principles, ípy, used approaches, advantages and limitations of environmental biotechnologies. PhD student will obtaine extended knowledges in relation to Environmental biotechnology in master study.
 
Course contents:
Aim: By studying the curriculum, students will obtain knowledge on basic principles and technologies of decontamination of persistent organic pollutants (dangerous contaminants of the environment) mainly by means of the biological approaches using degradation ability of microorganisms, fungi, and plants, i.e. using bioremediation, mycoremediation, and phytoremediation technologies, as well as physico-chemical technologies, nanotechnologies, and other innovative technologies. Knowledges on basic principles of bioremediation technologies as the alternative of physico-chemical methods is being emphasized.

Outline of subject:Technological application of degradation activity of microorganisms at the decontamination of water, soils, and sediments. Requirements to the microorganisms used in decontamination processes. Isolation and adaptation of microorganisms with degradation ability. Allochthonous and autochthonous microbial strains and consortia. Natural attenuation. Biostimulation and bioaugmentation as two basic strategies of bioremediation. In situ and ex situ remediation technologies. (Bio)venting, (Bio)sparging, (Bio)stripping, (Bio)sorption barriers, Biofilters, Bioreactors. Phytoremediation. Mycoremediation. Bioremediation of heavy and toxic metals. Nanotechnologies used for removal of contaminants. Biological wastewater processing. Biological processes for nitrogen and phosphorus removal. Principles, methods, advantages, and limitations of bioremediation processes. Combustion and non-combustion technologies. Classification of remediation technologies. Environmental burdens in Slovakia and Europe, legislation and available technologies.
