Assesment methods:
Preparation and presentation of work connected with degradation of polymers which are the aim of dissertation work of student.
 
Learning outcomes of the course unit:
Development of knowledge about mechanisms of oxidative degradation of polymers, photodegradation of polymers, thermal and chemical degradation of polymers and degradation proces in processing of polymers.
 
Course contents:
Principles of oxidative degradation of polymers. Basic antioxidant mechanisms(H-donors, hydroperoxide decomposers, alkyl radical scavengers,metal deactivator, multifuncional stabilizers).
Photodegradation of polymers.Mechanisms of UV stabilization ((UV absorption, quenching, hydroperoxide decomposition, free radical scavenging, stabilization mechanisms of HALS).
Thermal degradation and stabilization of selected polymers. Mechanisms of PVC degradation
(dehydrochlorination in absence of air, thermal oxidative degradation of PVC).
Pyrolysis of polymers. Mechanism of hydrolysis of polymers.
Basic principles of polymer degradation by acids. Action of acid scavengers.
Degradation proces in processing of polymers (melt fracture, coating mechanisms).Mechanisms of processing aid action.
Mechanisms of polymer degradation by flame. Flame retardant mechanisms.
