Learning outcomes of the course unit:
To acquaint students with non-cellular infectious particles, with prokaryotic and eukaryotic microbes.
Provide students with knowledge regarding the metabolism, genetics, diversity and biotic relationships of microorganisms with emphasis on practical applications and the role of microorganisms in biotechnology, medicine and environmental processes.
Course contents:
Viruses, bacteriophages, prions.
Genetics of microorganisms, mutation, gene transfer and recombination. Selection of mutants. Microbial genomics, genetic engineering.
Host-pathogen interactions. Microorganisms as origin of infectious diseases. Virulence, pathogenicity, antimicrobial therapy.
Microorganisms in the biosphere.
Catabolic and anabolic processes of microorganisms and their technological significance and importance in medicine.
