evolvement and presentation of individual work, written and oral exam.
Learning outcomes of the course unit:
Students will gain knowledge of the history of use of materials in the objects of cultural heritage inorganic and organic nature. They know the mechanisms of chemical reactions leading to their gradual transformation over time. On this basis, they can suggest ways suitable chemical protection of materials and sequence of chemical technology operations.
Course contents:
Chemistry and art history of inorganic materials - metals and inorganic pigments, silicate and aluminosilicate minerals and rocks chemistry and art history of organic materials - oils, fats and waxes, resins, balsams, essential oils, organic dyes, carbohydrate and protein binders. Cleanup and disinfection operations of heritage objects, water and organic solvents, surfactants, insecticides. Sterilization operations - chemical agents and technology. Reinforcement of different kinds of materials, petrification. Deacidification operations - handheld and mass technology. Criteria for the selection of materials to the various technological operations of preservation.
