Learning outcomes of the course unit:
Student has knowledge on the relationship between the substance structure and its 1H- and 13C-NMR spectra, which can be applied in the determination of the structure of unknown organic compounds. Student knows the principles of EPR spectroscopy, along with simulations of isotropic and anisotropic EPR spectra.
Course contents:
NMR spectroscopy, basic concepts (chemical shift, spin-spin interaction, the line width). 1H-NMR (1H-chemical shift, spin-spin coupling 1H-1H, interaction with other nuclei), 1H-chemical shift and structure relationship. Interpretation of 1H-NMR spectra of organic compounds.
13C-NMR, 13C-chemical shifts, 1H-13C interaction, 13C-chemical shifts and structure of the molecules. Interpretation of 13C-NMR spectra of organic compounds.
Recent trends in NMR (fundamentals of pulse techniques). 1H-selective decoupling, NOE, 13C-off resonance, INEPT, DEPT, COSY, NOESY. Practical applications of 1H- and 13C-NMR in determining the structure of an unknown organic compound.
NMR of other nuclei (31P, 19F, 29Si), interpretation of spectra and practical applications.
Analysis of complex NMR spectra of organic compounds, relationship structure-NMR spectrum.
Comparison of NMR-EPR, the basic concepts of EPR, g-factor, hyperfine interaction, the unpaired electron spin density, the use of EPR in structural analysis.
EPR spectra of isotropic systems: simulation analysis and interpretation of the isotropic EPR spectra using available computer programs (Simfonia, WinSim2002, Easyspin).
EPR spectra of anisotropic systems: Analysis and interpretation of anisotropic EPR spectra, the impact of the structure on the EPR spectrum, practical applications and simulations.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging, MRI tomography. Localized NMR spectroscopy, MRS.
The use of magnetic resonance spectroscopy in chemistry, biology and medicine.
The visit of workplaces of NMR, EPR spectroscopy and MRI imaging in Bratislava.
