Assesment methods:
Elaboration of the practical tasks and their submitting in written form at the end of the semester. Consultations and group discussions of the tasks in progress of elaboration are a required part of the work.
Learning outcomes of the course unit:
The course is an introduction to conservation science with stress on interdisciplinary communication. The aim is to achieve that students are oriented in current principles of survey, research methods, analyses, making diagnosis, interpretation of results and quality control. Movable and immovable cultural heritage is subject to continuous ageing and decay. The students shall be able to evaluate the state of conservation of materials, be able to define it and monitor it, proceed correctly in determining the diagnosis and defining the most appropriate intervention. This should be based on knowledge-based application of principles, technologies and materials.
Course contents:
-introduction to conservation science, conservation principles, interdisciplinary communication in conservation science, understanding of the profession of conservation scientist
-levels and methods of conservation and restoration - philosophy and ethics, levels of intervention, relevant principles
-conservation and restoration as interdisciplinarz teamwork
-the essence and principles of correct diagnosis making, survey, principles of decision-making on needed analyses
-conservator-restorer working methods and technologies
-cleaning, drying, sterilization of various materials
-consolidation, specific operations
