Assesment methods:
Students present their projects from given topic on seminars during semester. Quality of elaboraion and presentation of the project represents 30 % of the total assessment, knowledge from subject explained during lectures represents 70 %. Overall rating is governed by "Study Order of the STU."
Learning outcomes of the course unit:
Student has knowledge about:
- petroleum technology,
- separation and refining proccesses,
- mechanism, thermodynamics and kinetics of hydrocarbon processes,
- technology of catalytic and thermal processes,
- heavy petroleum technologies,
- auxiliary installations in refinery.
Course contents:
1.Introduction. . History and basic processes of crude oil industry. (allowance 2/1)
a.The origin and recovery and transport of petroleum
b.Refineries and influence of crude oil composition to the treatment.
Processing of crude oils with high sulfur content.
c.Corrosion and anticorrosion prevention
d.Seminar: Crude oil pre-processing. Dewatering and desalting of crude oil

2.Composition of crude oil and petroleum products and their physical properties (allowance 2/1)
a.Type of hydrocarbons, sulfur and nitrogen compound in crude oil
b.Density, viscosity, refractive index, molecular weight of crude oil products
c.Seminar: Relationship between composition of petroleum products and their properties

3.Distillation and rectification (allowance 2/1)
a.Separation of complex mixtures
b.Types of distillation separations
c.Seminar: Distillation column. Plates types and distillate draw-off. Head and side refluxes

4.Refining of petroleum products. (allowance 2/1)
b.Selective solvent refining
d.Seminar: Distillation curves calculation. Standard method (STN EN), true boiling point method (TBP), equilibrium evaporation method (EE).

5.Refining by chemical reagents (allowance 2/1)
a.Refinig with acids, clay and caustic treating
