Learning outcomes of the course unit:
The student acquires knowledge of the theoretical fundamentals of electron and luminescence spectra of organic compounds based on the principle of quantum mechanics. Student can interpret electron spectra and find the basic relations between electronic structure and electronic spectra of organic compounds based on quantum chemistry.
Course contents:
Electron Spectroscopy - overview of methods (emission and absorption spectra, fluorescence, phosphorescence, optical activity, circular dichroism, photoelectron spectroscopy).
Basic types of molecular orbitals and electronic transitions (singlet-singlet, triplet-triplet, singlet-triplet).
Symmetry of molecules, molecular orbitals and electron states.
The selection rules for electronic transitions (symmetric and spin-forbidden transitions).
Quantum chemical methods used in the interpretation of electron spectra.
Excited state properties and deactivation.
Effect of intramolecular and intermolecular interactions on the nature of spectra.
Interpretation of experimental electron spectra.
