The notation is defined by the currently valid study regulations at the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava.
 
Learning outcomes of the course unit:
To inform students about the basics of linear algebra, manipulations with linear operators, basic terms of group theory, and the consequences of molecular symmetry on physical and chemical properties of molecules. Students acquaire to classify the molecules according to their symmetry, to work with character tables and to use the obtained knowledge in chemical praxis.
 
Course contents:
Repetition (determinants, function expansion into series). Linear space. Linear operators and their properties. Characteristic problem. Spectral expansion and function of operator. Projection operators. Variation solution of a characteristic problem. Symmetry elements and operations. Some direct consequences of symmetry (optical activity, dipole moment, NMR spectra). Molecule classification by symmetry. Character tables of symmetry point groups. Vanishing integrals and orbital overlap. Selection rules for spectral transitions.
