Assesment methods:
Reports of papers and scientific journals, and one test with the result of minimum 56 %. Students are graded as follows: A 92-100 %, B 83-91 %, C 74-82 %, D 65-73 %, E 56-64 %.
 
Learning outcomes of the course unit:
Basic characteristics of biochemical technologies. Products of biotechnological industry a their use in praxis. To educate students to independent work and integration of knowledge during the solving of theoretical problems. Reports of papers and scientific journals.
 
Course contents:
1.) Basic characteristic of biochemical technologies. Difficulties of microbiological productions. Possibilities and limits of metabolites production. 2.) Biosystems important in technology. Review of microorganisms, plant and animal cultures used in biotechnological productions. 3.) Bacteria, importance and exploitation in biotechnological productions. 4.) Microscopic fungi, importance and exploitation in biotechnological productions. 5.) Yeast, importance and exploitation in biotechnological productions. 6.) Biotechnological resources. Source of carbon, nitrogen, macro- and microelements, growth compounds. Cultivation and production media. 7.) Batch, semi-continuous and continuous cultivation. Separation and isolation processes. Wastes in biotechnological technologies. 8.) Bioreactors for cultivation of bacteria, yeast, filamentous fungi, plant tissue cultures and animal cells. 9.) Biotechnological production of organic acids, amino acids, alcohols, heterocyclic compounds and other compounds. 10.) Exploitation of biotechnological production in food and agricultural industry. 11.) Exploitation of biotechnological production in pharmacology, medicine and environmental protection. 12.) Innovative trends. Gene, protein, enzyme and molecular engineering. Construction of new biosystems. 13.) Integration of knowledge during the solving of theoretical problems. Reports of scientific journal papers.
