Assesment methods:
Points to obtain classified credit consist of two parts. The first is the quality of elaboration and presentation of project on the given topic (accounts for 40% of total assessment) and the second is knowledge from subject explained during lectures (60%). Two written tests from subject discussed during lectures will be written during semester. Overall evaluation of study follows rules given in “Study order of STU”.
Learning outcomes of the course unit:
Student will acquire knowledge on the importance, resources and of types of traditional and non-traditional forms of various energy sources, with a focus on fossil fuels. Student understands the concept of conversion processes of energy raw materials into the desired form of energy, their effectiveness, understands various ways of storage and transmission of energy. Student can identify the need for energy in chemical technology, processes for its supply, including the use of waste heat and knows the methods of improving energy efficiency in chemical company.
Course contents:
1.Importance of energy, basic concepts and definitions, interdisciplinarity and energy diversification. Forms of energy, classification of energy resources, energy technology. (allowance 2/0)
2.Distribution of world reserves of fossil fuels (coal, crude oil, natural gas). Mining , transport and storage of fossil raw materials. Unconventional fossil fuel resources - shale gas, gas hydrates , CBM methane, oil sands, tight oil. (allowance 2/0)
3.World consumption of energy resources. Trends and projections in the use of energy resources. Energy Policy. Inventories of raw materials and energy consumption in Slovakia . Oil and gas pipelines in Slovakia . (allowance 2/0)
4.Renewable energy sources - biomass, biogas , hydro, solar, wind , geothermal. (allowance 2/0)
5.Effectiveness of different forms of energy transformations . The quality of various forms of energy . Chemical-energetic aspects of energy technologies. Relationship between energy and chemical technology. (allowance 2/0)
6.Technologies for electricity production. Production of electricity in Slovakia. Remote transmission of energy. (allowance 2/0)
7.The need and production of energy in chemical technology . Power generation in the chemical factory. Production, types and balance of water vapor. (allowance 2/0)
8.Relationship between energy and the environment. Measures to improve energy efficiency in chemical technology. Industrial waste heat, its use ( recuperation). (allowance 2/0)
9.Electricity generation, cogeneration units. Energy storage (pumped storage power plants, chemical energy, synthetic gas and liquid fuels). (allowance 2/0)
10.Hydrogen energy and fuel cells. Chemical batteries. (allowance 2/0)
11.Presentation of projects together with the discussion on the topics presented. (allowance 2/0)
