Assesment methods:
The exam consists of a written test and an oral test for 50 points. To successfully passing the exam, the student must achieve at least 28 points.
Students are graded as follows: A 46-50 points, B 41-45 points, C 37-40 points, D 32-36 points, E 28-31 points.
Learning outcomes of the course unit:
Knowlege of chemistry of organometallic compounds and their applications in the organic synthesis.
Course contents:
Introduction to organometallic chemistry : definition and classification (on basis of ligand type), formalisms, oxidation state, coordination state, example of carbine and carbyne complexes. Hapticity, structure, bonding and reactivity in ethylenic and allylic complexes. Synthesis, structure, bonding and reactivity in carbene and carbyne complexes, fluxional behaviour.
Reaction mechanism: preliminary ideas on different types of mechanisms (oxidative addition, reductive elimination, insertion, -H elimination, transmetallation, attack on ligand), an idea on trans effect. Reductions of the unsaturated bond (Wilkinson, Crabtree. "Cross coupling" reactions (Karash, Suzuki, Sonogashira, Stille, Kumada, Negishi, Heck). Alkene-/alkyne metatheses (Schrock, Grubbs, Hoveyda). Carbonylations and oxycarbonylations. Total syntheses.
