Learning outcomes of the course unit:
To introduce to students techniques used in molecular biology to identification and diagnosis of bacteria, yeasts and filamentous fungi and methods used in determining the growth inhibition of microorganisms biologically active substances. To teach students to prepare mutant strains of microorganisms from the perspective of their potential use in biotechnology research and practice.
Course contents:
Identification tests of bacteria, yeasts and filamentous fungi using molecular biology techniques (PCR, RAPD, ...). Transformation of bacterial cells, isolation of bacteriophages. Selection and isolation of mutants. Ames test for determining the potential mutagens. Inhibition of growth of undesirable microorganisms, resistance to antibiotics.
