University: Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava
Faculty: Faculty of Civil Engineering
Course unit code: I1-ANKO
Course unit title: Structural Analysis
Mode of delivery, planned learning activities and teaching methods:
lecture2 hours weekly (on-site method)
seminar2 hours weekly (on-site method)

Credits allocated: 5

Recommended semester/trimester: Structures of Buildings - master (compulsory), 1. semester
Level of study: 2.
Prerequisites for registration: none

Assesment methods:
control of the exercise and the current tests

Learning outcomes of the course unit:
Students gain the basic knowledges of the modeling and solution of the truss, beam, panel and space structures on the base of the finite and infinite element method and finite strip method. They will become familiar with the approximation and meshing process as well the accuracy of the structural analysis. They gain the experience from the modeling and the structural analysis on the computer. They acquire the experiences from the static and dynamic simulations of the structures behavior on the computer using ANSYS software system.

Course contents:
- The basic variation principles of the structural analysis. Displacement, force and hybrid model of the finite element. Algorithm development of the structural analysis.
- The solutions of the statically indeterminate plane and space member structures (truss, beam and frame) using the FEM, considering the loading by forces, temperature, inelastic displacements of supports.
- The solution of the panel buildings. The basic equations of the plane stress and strain state. The approximation and meshing of the panel structures. The cartesian and isoparametric elements.
- The Kirchhoff and Reissner-Mindlin theories of the plate bending. The approximation and meshing of the plate structures. The cartesian and isoparametric elements.
- The shell structures. The basic equations, approximation and meshing of the shell structures.
- The soil-structure interaction, the basic equations of the soil models, the finite and infinite elements
- Material nonlinearity, the plastic and failure function, the methods of the solution of the nonlinear problems.
- The solution of the stability of the structures, the basic equations and solution methods.
- The theory of the geometric nonlinearity. The basic principles of the large displacement ant rotations.
- The method of sub-structures and sub-modeling. The optimization of the meshing and the adaptive meshes method.
- The applications of the computational solution to the particular problems of statics and dynamics of building structures using the ANSYS software system.
