Learning outcomes of the course unit:
Students will become acquainted with principles of the selection and design of systems using unconventional renewable energy for heating, heating-up of warm service water, ventilation and air-conditioning, heating-up of swimming pool water. Solar energy systems (SES) for seasonal and all the year round utilization, design of collectors and components of the systems, thermal and economical evaluation. Heat storage in the SES. Complex utilization of geothermal energy (GE). Wind energy, biomass and biogas.
Course contents:
 Kinds and forms of energy. The fuel and energy situation in Slovakia. Conditions of utilization of renewable kinds of energy. The sun and its model, principles and qualities of the solar radiation. Climatic conditions on the territory of Slovakia related to the solar energy.
 Solar energy systems (SES). Components of the SES: collectors, reservoirs, pumps, security equipment. Energy systems for heating-up warm service water and technology water for swimming pools, heating with short-term heat storage. Economic evaluation of the SES.
 Basic characteristic parameters of sources of the geothermal water (GTW), occurrence and conditions of utilization in Slovakia. Usable energy potential and usable amount of the GTW and the GE. Technology equipment and systems for utilization of the GE (direct and indirect exploitation).
 Algorithm of complex multistage utilization of the GE. Concept of the selection of off-take places. Removal of used waste GTW (public sewage, cooling channels, dilution and outlet to recipients, re-injection).
 Ways of the GE utilization rate evaluation and the proposal of measures for improvement of the utilization of accessible energy potential. The use of the GE for production of electric power. Ways of use -- practical examples of applications in the world and options in Slovakia.
