Students will learn basic facts about algebraic structures, with emphasis on semigroups, groups, fields, partially ordered sets and lattices. They will be able to apply their knowledge to working with algebraic structures that appear in geometry, representations of data structures, and in other areas.
Course contents: | |||||||||||||
• Basic concepts: Binary operations and their properties, semigroups and groups.
• Cyclic, abelian, dihedral, permutation and matrix groups. • Finite fields and their applications in cryptography and coding. • Partially ordered sets and lattices. • Applications of partially ordered sets in representations of data structures.
