Prerequisites for registration: passed Mathematical analysis 1 (B-MA1) and passed Mathematical analysis 2 (B-MA2) and passed Linear algebra 1 (B-LA1)
 
Assesment methods:
To complete successfully a test during semester, to finish an assignment at the end of semester, exam.
 
Learning outcomes of the course unit:
Student will gain knowledge on finite difference methods for the solution of initial and boundary value problems for differential equations in one and several dimensions, and on solvers for resulting algebraic equations. Student will be able to understand simple mathematical models and to solve them using finite difference methods by implementing them in software package Mathematica.
 
Course contents:
- Mathematical model in the form of differential equation and its numerical solution.
- Numerical methods for solution of initial value problems for systems of ordinary differential equations.
- Finite difference methods for solution of boundary value problems for elliptic equations.
- Finite difference methods for parabolic equations, time discretization, stability.
- Solvers for systems of algebraic equations.
