Assesment methods:
Test - maxuimum 60 points. Presentation - maximum 40 points.
To pass the exam, students are required to obtain: A - minimum 85 points. B - minimum 75 points, C- minimum 65 points. D- minimum 60 points. E- minimum 56 points.
Learning outcomes of the course unit:
The aim of this subject is to obtain a basic knowledge about the structure of proteins and DNA as well as about their thermodynamic and kinetic properties and mutual interactions. Student will understand the basic principles of NMR and X-ray in the structural elucidation of biomolecules. Students will understand the structural aspects of biomembranes and transport phenomena. Basic principles of non-equilibrium thermodynamics in biodisciplines. Students will understand the role of redox-active metals and radicals in the damage to biomolecules as well as protective mechanisms against deleterious effects of free radicals. Students will become familiar with quantum-chemical calculations of electronic structure of biomolecules.
Course contents:
Structure of proteins and DNA - experimental methods of their structural studies. Biological membranes and trasnport thorugh membranes. Diffusion - mathematical account. Non-equilibrium description of transport phenomena. Free radicals and antioxidants in biosystems. Use of magnetic resonance and quantum-chemical calculations in the study of biomolecules.
