Learning outcomes of the course unit:
Student gains knowledge about immune system (IS), its composition and function. He/she can describe the immune cells, their function and the mechanism of action. He/she can describe various kinds of antigens, structure, function and the production of antibodies, including monoclonal, and can explain the variability of antibodies on the basis of genetics. He/she can describe the principles of immune reactions and their detection. He/she knows the mechanisms of IS activation during disease as well as some diseases of IS, their causes, the interconnectedness of IS with neuro-endocrine system and mutual influence with the environmental factors.
 
Course contents:
The subject of immunology and immunochemistry. Immune response and its mechanisms. Immune cells. Antigens. Major histocompatibility complex. Immunoglobulins. Antigen receptors and regulatory molecules. Antibody generation. Polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies. Complement. Phagocytosis, phagocytes and inflammation. Immunochemical methods of first, second and third generation. Basics of clinical immunology - alergies, immunodeficiencies and autoimmune diseases. AIDS. Immunopharmacology. Effect of various factors on immune system. Mutual relationships of systems.
