Learning outcomes of the course unit:
The subject builds on the knowledge acquired in the course "Organic Chemistry" and provides an explicatory analysis of mechanisms of organic reactions, taking into account also electronic and steric factors. Knowledge of reactivity of organic compounds helps students to understand a large number of so far known reactions.
 
Course contents:
Mechanisms of chemical reactions. Structural effects on stability and reactivity of organic compounds. Stability of reaction intermediates. Relationship between structure and reactivity. Addition reactions. Elimination reactions. Mechanisms of modern methods for preparation of alkenes. Nucleophilic substitution. Addition and condensation reactions of carbonyl compounds. Reactivity of enols and enolates. Reactions of carboxylic acids and their derivatives. Oxidations of organic compounds. Reductions of organic compounds. Mechanisms of complex reactions of organic compounds.
