Prerequisites for registration:
Homework problems totals to 20 points, one experimental laboratory total 10 points, the rest comes from the final exam.
|Learning outcomes of the course unit:|
Student will understand the relation between geometrical structure and chemical composition of matter on one hand, and its macroscopic physical properties, such as stability, elasticity, thermal, conductive or optical properties.
|Crystal lattice reciprocal lattice and X-ray diffraction; separation of the motion of ionic nuclei and electrons, Born-Oppenheimer approximation; simple models of cohesive energy of solids; electronic band structure of solids, Bloch theorem and its consequences; electronic structure of metals; tight-binding method; ground state properties of matter; semiclassical dynamics of electrons, Boltzman kinetic equation; macroscopic Maxwell equations, polarisation, susceptibility and Kramers-Kroning relations; Drude model of the susceptibility, quantum theory of susceptibility; phonons and their contribution to thermal capacity of solids.|
