Learning outcomes of the course unit:
Obtaining the theoretical knowledge about basic methods of diagnostics of materials, acquainting with the experimental background of selected diagnostic techniques. By passing the subject the student will master the theoretical principles of the most widely used spectroscopic, diffraction and imaging methods of materials analysis.
Course contents:
Classification of diagnostic methods: spectroscopic, diffraction and imaging methods.
Sources of radiation, photons, charged particles, neutrons.
Structure of matter: energetic levels of atoms and molecules.
Optical spectroscopy, emission and absorption, spectrum, spectral terms.
Atomic spectroscopies: atomic absorption spectroscopy, atomic emission spectroscopy.
Molecular spectroscopies: spectrometry of visible and ultraviolet radiation, infrared spectrometry, Raman spectroscopy.
Mass spectrometry, mass spectrometry with inductively coupled plasma (ICP-MS).
Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR).
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
X-ray diffraction, characteristic radiation.
Transmission and scanning electron microscopy, Auger spectroscopy.
Diagnostics in nuclear medicine, gamma camera, CT, PET.
