Learning outcomes of the course unit:
Learning basic microbiological techniques. Preparation of culture media, isolation of pure culture, unknown identification, staining methods, metabolic activities. Enumeration of microorganisms. Growth and inhibition of microorganisms.
Course contents:
Aseptic techniques. Preparation of culture media. Sterilization. Inoculation and cultivation of microorganisms. Isolation of pure cultures. Microscopy - wet mount technique, preparation of smears, heat fix and staining. Measurements of growth and inhibition of microbial growth. Effect of environmental factors on growth. Identification of unknown bacteria, yeasts and filamentous fungi. Microbiological analysis of samples of food, water and air.
