Assesment methods:
Criteria of success rate (percentage of the results of the course evaluation) are used for classifying grades as follows: A 92 – 100%, B 83 – 91%, C 74 – 82%, D 65 – 73%, E 56 – 64% and FX 0 – 55%. Student receives credit, if the results were assessed by one of the classification grades from A to E.
Learning outcomes of the course unit:
Students completing the course know the principles of paper-making processes. They understand the basic paper properties and different paper grades. They know principles of printing inks composition, properties and drying mechanisms. They are acquinted with the latest trends in printing and packaging materials. The students know existing standards, laws and regulations relating to materials used in the printing and packaging industry.
Course contents:
Printing papers, pulping processes and paper making technology, coating and calendering of paper.
Papers grades and properties.
Printing inks composition. Drying mechanisms of printing inks and varnishes.
Printing inks types and properties.
Polymer based packaging materials. Plastic films chemistry, types and technology of production. Plastics films – surface and volume characteristics.
Barrier characteristics of plastic films.
Multi-layered packaging materials.
Biodegradable and oxo-biodegradable plastic films.
Auxiliary materials, adhesives.
