Learning outcomes of the course unit:
To gain knowledge of the material nature of cultural heritage: the diversity, properties, degradation over time. Criteria for the choice of materials in the process of restoration and conservation of heritage objects.
Course contents:
Diversity of the materials in the objects of cultural heritage. Assorting of heritage objects from point of view of used materials. Physico-chemical properties of surfaces. Physico-chemical properties of colloidal systems. Polymers in the process of conservation and restoration. Physico-chemical properties of polymers. Natural polymers of plant origin used in preservation and restoration. Natural polymers of animal origin used in the preservation and restoration. Natural resins, chemical nature, types, properties and use. Synthetic polymers used in the restoration and preservation - thermoplastics, thermosets, others. Selection criteria.
