Learning outcomes of the course unit:
Student is skilled in fundamental principles of cell mechanisms alteration by influence of biologically active chemical substance in relation to their target structure (substances integrating with DNA, substances altering protein expression on post-transcription level, substances with protective effects against damage induced by several pathological process developments, antimicrobial substances including antibiotics). Student also will obtain knowledge about possibilities of targeted treatment by substances influencing changed tissue function induced by pathological processes associated with development of several diseases.
 
Course contents:
Effects of substances on biological systems and basics mechanisms of their effects; interaction of substances with DNA, substances induced DNA breaks, substances altering the processes of DNA repair and substances altering transcription; substances influencing cell proliferation, substances influencing protein expression on post-transcriptional levels including micro-RNA; examples of substances modulating enzyme activities and their applicability in therapy; examples of substances altering cell signaling and cell regulatory pathways; examples of substances influencing membrane transport and membrane potential and their applicability in therapy; substances buffering oxidative stress and substances operating against damage induced by ischemia and hypoxia of tissues including modulators of programmed cell death mechanisms; antimicrobial and antiviral substances and their applicability in therapy; examples of targeted therapy of different diseases (cardiovascular, cancer, metabolic, etc) with biologically active substances.
