Learning outcomes of the course unit:
Molecular biology and genetics describes the major molecular processes that lie behind most biological events including replication of DNA, transcription and processing of RNA, translation of genetic information into proteins. This course covers areas such as genome structure, DNA replication and control of gene expression in eukaryotes and prokaryotes.
 
Course contents:
The structure of DNA. Chromosome organization. Regulation of chromatin structure. Noncoding DNA. The structure and versatility of RNA.
DNA replication. DNA polymerases. The replication apparatus. Topoisomerases. The structure of telomeric DNA and telomerase. Telomeres, aging and cancer.
DNA recombination. Transposons. Mutation and repair of DNA.
Transcription in prokaryotes. Regulation of transcription: role of σ (sigma) factors, activators and represors. Two-component system in bacteria. Attenuation. Antitermination.
Translation. Genetic code. Recoding. Function of tmRNA and stringent factors/RelA.
Transcription in eukaryotes. The complexity of the transcriptional apparatus in higher organisms. A focus on Pol II and basal transcription factors. The activation and structure of transcription factors. Transcription factors and eukaryotic gene control.
Heterochromatin and epigenetic control of gene expression.
RNA processing and post-transcriptional gene regulation. Splicing, including alternative splicing; capping; polyadenylation. RNA editing.
Translation. Formation of initiation complex in eukaryotes: control of initiation and phosphorylation of eIF2. RNA interference.
Translocation of proteins - specific signal sequences. Cotranslation translocation into endoplasmic reticulum of proteins. Vesicular transport and sorting of proteins. Traffic between nucleus and cytoplasm. Protein import pathways into mitochondria: TIM and TOM complexes.Degradation of proteins: ubiquitination and proteasome.
