Assesment methods:
Attendance of lectures and elaboration of the practical tasks which shall be discussed and presented over the semester as part of the training having a close link with the lectures.
Students who have submitted all the practical tasks and fulfilled their criteria and demonstrated the acquired practical capacities during the seminars shall be eligible to sit for the exam.
The final grade is a combination of the seminar task evaluation (80%) and the exam (20%).
Learning outcomes of the course unit:
The course offers an overview of the main stages of development of conservation concepts to present day principles and philosophy in the context of cultural diversity. Students get acquiainted with basic terminology and notions. Practical tasks aim at offering a better understanding of cultural heritage, of the relevant international documents on conservation and restoration, the essence of preservation and the practice in Slovakia.
The students shall:
- understand the current situation in heritage conservation and restoration as a result of the cultural evolution of societies
- be familiar with the basic notions, existing philosophical and legal contexts. By means of working with relevant international recommendations and charters they will gains the ability to apply the studied principles to concrete situations: they will be able to evaluate these and propose interventions
- understand their contribution to preserving the authenticity and values of the object within an interdisciplinary teamwork

- history of cultural heritage prostection and preservation, theories and current views
- basic documents and organizations of the international professional community
- UNESCO World cultural and natural heritage - principles
- values, authenticity and integrity
- philosophy and methods
- presentation and opening for visitors, appropriate use
- management principles for monuments, sites and collections
- monitoring and risk management
- crafts, traditional materials and technologies, level of intervention
- surveys and documentation, recording
