University: Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava
Faculty: Faculty of Chemical and Food Technology
Course unit code: N400C9_4D
Course unit title: Chemistry of Fossil Fuels and Biofuels
Mode of delivery, planned learning activities and teaching methods:
lecture2 hours weekly (on-site method)

Credits allocated: 3

Recommended semester/trimester: Organic Technology and Technology of Fuels - doctoral (optional), 1. year
Level of study: 3.
Prerequisites for registration: none

Assesment methods:
Evaluation of student consists of two parts. The first is the quality of elaboration and presentation of project on the given topic (accounts for 50% of total assessment) and the second is knowledge from subject explained during lectures (50%) verified in written test. Overall evaluation of study follows rules given in “Study order of STU”.

Learning outcomes of the course unit:
Student understands the production, composition, properties and use of fuels from conventional and unconventional hydrocarbon resources. Controls the production of synthetic fuels from coal, natural gas and biomass. Student is able to apply conversion processes for bio-oil.

Course contents:
Species, stocks and production of conventional and unconventional sources of liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons. Catalytic and thermal treatment processes of fossil raw materials for the production of automotive fuels. Comparison of conventional treatment processes of crude oils and unconventional hydrocarbon resources (oil sands, oil shale, oil, oil shale, shale gas, gas hydrates) and bio-oil of different origins. Sustainability in the exploitation and processing of hydrocarbon raw materials. Production of synthetic fuels from coal, natural gas and biomass. Conversion processes for bio-oil.
