Learning outcomes of the course unit:
Student gets information about topics: Masonry as the material of load-bearing members and structures. Design of masonry load-bearing members made with unreinforced, reinforced, prestressed or confined masonry. Structural systems of buildings with masonry load-bearing members. Causes and manifestation of failures, faults and errors of masonry buildings. Diagnostic methods to gain data about properties and condition of materials and structures to evaluate their reliability and lifespan. Principles, methods and materials used at protection, repair and strengthening of structures.
 
Course contents:
Masonry – the material of load-bearing members and structures (characteristics). Kinds of the masonry and its components – masonry units and mortar for masonry. Mechanical and physical properties of the masonry.
Design of masonry load-bearing members made of unreinforced masonry, subjected to centric and eccentric pressure, shear, bending and concentrated pressure.
Design of masonry load-bearing members made of reinforced masonry, subjected to pressure, shear and bending.
Design of masonry load-bearing members made of prestressed and confined masonry – basis of design.
Structural systems of buildings with masonry load-bearing members – provision of spatial rigidity of the structural system, interaction of the peripheral masonry load-bearing walls with the floor structures, peripheral masonry leaf walls, basement peripheral masonry walls subjected to earth and water pressure.
General procedures for the assessment of existing structures. Diagnostic of materials and constructions. Testing methods and field tests.
Principles, methods and materials used at protection, repair and strengthening of structures.
