Assesment methods:
The activity of student during the semester - on lectures and excercises - could be awarded by up to 40 points. The final examination, in written, is worth up to 60 points. The points acquired during the semester are added to the points obtained at the final examination. For the grade A at least 92 points in total are necessary. For the grade B at least 83 points in total are necessary. For the grade C at least 74 points in total are necessary. For the grade D at least 65 points in total are necessary, and for the grade E at least 56 points. No credits will be given to the student failing to reach at least 56 points in total.
Learning outcomes of the course unit:
Student will obtain the knowledge and skills necessary to solve practical engineering problems by the methods of physics. He will be capable to categorize the problems and understend the pecularitieas and common features of various phenomena. He will beable to solve simple problems of mechanics, electromagnetism and thermics.
Course contents:
Typology of problems in physics (scale in space, lumped vs. distributed parameters, dimensionality 1D-2D-3D, scale in time, static vs. dynamic, stationary vs. transient, linear vs. nonlinear)
Force, work, energy, power
Fields in physics, action of forces on point objects (gravity, electrostatics). Intensity and potential. Gauss law, Newton law, Coulomb law (only for particle mass or point charge)
Stiffness and flexibility – basic concept. Mechanical properties of solids, liquids, gases
Forces acting on bodies: moment of force, pair of forces, rotation, center of mass, moment of inertia. Electric dipole in dielectrics, polarization and electric susceptibility, Gauss law for dielectrics
Electric field in metals, movement of electric charges, work and power of electrical current
Magnetic field in vacuum, magnetic force acting on electrical current, magnetic dipole, magnetic field in matter (magnetization, permeability, susceptibility)
Mechanical vibrations, harmonic oscillator - equation of motion, energy of linear harmonic oscillator. Damping, forced vibrations, resonance. Mechanical waves.
Electromagnetic induction, electromagnetic field, electromagnetic waves. Wave optics, geometric optics (basic principles).
Ideal gas - internal energy, mean kinetic energy of particles, gas pressure, heat, work. 1st law of thermodynamics.
Thermal capacity, thermodynamic potentials. Phase transitions of the 1st and 2nd kind, latent heat.
Laws describing diffusion, mechanisms of heat transfer.
