Assesment methods:
Two written tests will be conducted on the exercises during the semester. The results of tests will be taken into account in the final evaluation during the exam. The number of credits for the student classification from A to FX corresponds to the STU internal regulations.
 
Learning outcomes of the course unit:
The student will acquire the basic knowledge about the technologies of production of the main types of technical materials. The student will know the raw materials and basic construction characteristics of the technological equipment for the production of materials. The student will know the main parameters of technological processes of production of technical materials. He/she will acquire the physical and chemical fundamentals of processes carried out in these devices and will know the basic chemical compositions, structural characteristics, phase compositions as well as the macroscopic dimensional and shape characteristics of the products of primary materials production. The student will obtain the basic knowledge about the influence of production technologies and their parameters on the mechanical, technological and utility properties of the main types of materials used in the technical practice.
 
Course contents:
Production of pig iron in a blast furnace. Raw materials entering the blast furnace, basic chemical reactions. Steel production in an oxygen converter. Steel casting into the moulds. Continuous casting of steel. Production of metallurgical semi-products from steel (sheets, belts, profiles, rods, pipes). Steel production in an electric arc furnace. Special technologies of steel production - vacuum arc melting, electroslag remelting, spray forming, powder metallurgy. Production of graphitic cast iron. Production of metal powders and metallurgical semi-products from metal powders. Production of metallic glasses by rapid cooling of the melt. Aluminium production. Production of primary aluminium from bauxite ore (Bayer process, calcination of aluminium hydroxide, electrolysis of aluminium oxide by Hall/Herault process). Production of aluminium alloys and semi-products for casting, extrusion pressing and rolling. Production of copper by pyro-metallurgical processes and production of metallurgical semi-products from copper. Production of macromolecular substances, polymerization equipment and basic chemical reactions in reactors. Production of plastics, production of plastic granulates, additives to plastics. Processing of plastic granulates to the simple-shaped semi-products. Production of elastomers, manufacturing of rubber compositions on the base of natural rubber, vulcanization. Production of technical glass, glass raw materials, production of glass batch, chemical reactions during production of glass batch, shaping of molten glass. Production of ceramic materials. Sanitary, utility and technical ceramics, raw materials and their treatment, pressing, sintering and glazing.
