Learning outcomes of the course unit:
The student gains knowledge on the processes of heat treatment of metallic materials, devices and equipment for the heat treatment, selection of suitable materials for processing of tools and components made from iron alloys
 
Course contents:
Characteristic of heat treatment processes, Quality ensurance of components. Work hygiene, safety, ecology. Mechanization and automation of workplaces, potential for energy savings.
Theory of phase transformations in heat treatment of steels (mechanisms and kinetics).
Controlled atmospheres, aim, principles, practical application, occupational safety in use of controlled atmospheres.
Annealing of steels and cast irons, annealing types, typical regimes, application.
Hardening, quenching types, quenching media and their properties
Surface hardening, aim, induction heating, microstructures of layers, suitable materials, practical applications.
Thermo-chemical heat treatment, characteristic, types of thermo-chemical heat treatment, suitable materials, equipment.
Carburizing, carburizing agents, furnaces.
Vacuum heat treatment, characteristic of vacuum, benefits, vacuum enhanced evaporation of elements, practical applications.
Plasma assisted heat treatment. Plasma nitriding, carburizing, physical and metallurgical principles, benefits, devices.
Laboratory devices and checking of heat processed components. Causes of damage and failure of components due to the heat treatment.
Surface treatment - surface coating (painting), deposition (physical vapour deposition, Chemical vapour deposition, ...) and specific methods of surface treatment (surface passivation, ...).
